Isles Drafting: Offensive prospects

It’s Draft day ladies and gents. So while you wait anxiously take a look at some of the possible offensive players the Islanders might take with the 5th overall pick.

Ryan Johansen, Center, 6-3, 188 lbs. Port Moody, BC.
During the 08-09 hockey season Ryan Johansen playing in the BCHL for the Penticton Vees. During his time there Johansen netted 5 goals, 12 assists and 17 points in 47 games. During the playoffs he added another 4 goals, 3 assists and 7 points. The following season Johansen made the jump to the WHL’s Portland Winterhawks. With the Hawks he managed to score 25 goals, 44 assists and 69 points in 71 games and finished the season a +17. Johansen also Participated in the 2010 CHL top prospect game as a member of team Cherry.

What the Scouts Say

B.J. MacDonald, NHL Central Scouting: "He has good on-ice vision and also angles well on the forecheck. He has the intelligence to play power-play as well as penalty kill. He can be shifty and has the ability to beat a defenseman one-on-one. Once he fills out and gains more strength he could turn raw talent into a valuable center at both ends of rink. He has displayed nice playmaking capabilities and this should continue at the next level." (NHL.com)

Hockey’s Future: “Scouts are keen on his puck skills and vision. Johansen is a skilled mover of the puck and possesses the size to become an effective power forward. He is versatile and his touch around the net will set him apart from the muckers and grinders.”

Mike Johnston, Portland Winterhawks head coach and GM: "Ryan Johansen has really good vision. He’s a prototypical big center – good hands, good vision, distributes the puck well, and protects the puck well in order to make plays. He’s a young kid who we use in a lot of different situations, the power play, penalty kill and key faceoffs." (NHL.com)

Nino Niederreiter, Left Wing, 6-2, 203 lbs. Chur, Switzerland.
“El Nino”, as he know in the hockey world, spent 09-10 season with the WHL’s Portland Winterhawks. During his one year there Niederreiter put up 36 goals, 24 assists and 60 points in a spam of 65 games. Then netting an additional 8 goals, 8 assists, and 16 points during the Winterhawks 13 playoff games. He left the team in December and January to represent Switzerland in the 2010 World Junior Championships. There he excelled on the world stage scoring 6 goals, 4 assists and 10 points in 7 games for the Swiss team. The previous year “El Nino” spent time playing hockey in his home land for a season with the HC Davos club.

International Scouting Services: He has emerged from WJHC as a potential top 10 selection. Regarded as perhaps the best offensive prospect the Swiss have ever produced. He has great size and strength to go with very quick hands and a strong shot. (TSN.com)

E.J. McGuire, Director of NHL Central Scouting: "Plays in Portland but showed the world how good he could be in the (World Junior Championship) playing for the Swiss National Team. And after that tournament he kept getting better. He's shifty, he's skilled, he has a good stride and he loves battling in the corner." (NHL.com)

Hockey’s Future: “Good size and skill. Niederreiter is well developed physically and excels in big games. Rates very high on sheer skill, determination and personality.”

Mike Johnston, Portland Winterhawks head coach: "Nino is a combination of a power forward and scorer. He’s a guy who can play a very physical, very involved game. He has touch around the net, he has great instincts on where to be around the net and when he gets the puck on his stick he usually creates scoring chances or a goal. He’s a player who, personality-wise, is a great teammate, a real key focal point for the group. And he’s becoming a better two-way player."

Alex Burmistrov, Center, 6-0, 170 lbs. Kazan, Russia.
"I really hate the KHL. It's for old guys. I don't want anything to do with the KHL for a long, long time ... maybe ever." That what Burmistrov Told NHL fanhouse three days ago. The 18 year old Russian center has been doing a lot to convince NHL teams he wants to play in North America and in the NHL. Last Burmistrov jumped ship to North America to join the OHL’s Barrie Colts. During his time there he scored 22 goals, 43 assists, and 65 points in 62 games. He was also a key contributor in getting the Colts to the OHL finals. During their run Burmistrov scored 8 goals, 8 assists and 16 points. Prior to leaving for North America, he played for Ak Bars in the Russian junior league. In 09 he played for Russia at the U-18 Championships, as well as being a member of the Russian team at the World Junior Championship in 2010.

E.J. McGuire, Director of NHL Central Scouting: “He's like a water spider out there on the ice. Light on his feet, but he's got a venomous strike like a snake when he goes on the offense. Speed and agility, great fakes and he'll bring players, fans, alike out of their seats. I'd compare him with a (Alexei) Kovalev, (Sergei) Samsonov or (Maxim) Afinogenov.” (NHL.com)

Hockey’s Future: “Burmistrov's main atributes are his speed and his playmaking ability. He is probably one of the more electrifying players in his age group, having the ability to create offesnive opportunites when none might be obvious. Burmistov's lack of size could hinder him at the pro level, but he passed his first test in North America by turning in a successful season in the OHL.”

International Scouting Services: “Burmistrov is a pure scoring, confident and speedy offensive threat who really takes advantage of the space his teammates can make for him. He has tremendous offensive instincts and is very tenacious in offensive situations.” (TSN.com)

Marty Williamson, Barrie Colts head coach: "He's got a great hockey IQ, and is a wonderful skater. He has a habit of playing well above his size and has a great feel for timing on the ice. He battles hard and is continually working on his shot to become an effective scorer, but he is a great passer and has great vision on the ice."

Islanders Crazy Is moving on up to the Bloguin Network of sports blogs. The revolutionary site just relaunched this morning in it new portal/ user friendly design. The site features blogs from every major sport including MMA and entertainment blogs. We were approached in late august and the Bloguin team has worked diligently to launch our site. Also under the new site we are changing the name of the site to Islanders Hockey Blog. Eric and I are extremely pleased and excited to launch the new site and ecourage all our readers to head over to the new site from now on and check out all the blog on the Bloguin Network.

Kelly's firing the wrong move?

The decision made, Paul Kelly was officially dismissed as NHLPA executive Director at 3:30 this morning. According to the official press release the board overwhelmingly voted to relieve Kelly of his duties due to what is being reported by TSN “Whispers of unhappiness with Kelly's distance with some players and perception Kelly may have been too close to the NHL commissioners office.” With that weak excuse the NHLPA will have a lot to answer to today when or if they address the media.

Kelly who took over the job in 2007 has had the support of many media and blogger personalities From Tsn and the The Hockey News to Puck Daddy and HockeyBuzz’s Dee Karl. Now all of them are asking what’s next? Who will take Kelly’s place? And why was fired in the first place? Many have now started speculating what the aftermath could be and several have even mentioned another work stoppage in the near future. Although the thoughts are a tad radical they are not out of the question, but in any event this situation does not bode well for the fans or the league. The league, more notable the players take a major PR hit for their more or less shocking news to let Kelly go and have instantly taken a beating left and right for firing what seems to have been a qualified labor lawyer doing a good job of watching out for his players but also managing to work with the NHL cooperatively. Looking at the other side of the spectrum, the fans now have to watch and wait to see who is appointed the new Executive Director and how he will operate with the league, owners and players and if this will have in any way an impact on how the game is played and even another possible work stoppage (which would be a major hit to the league possible alienating their fans once again.) So in short this mess NEEDS to be addressed, and fixed as quickly as possible so no permanent damage is done.

"Silli Times" and DP finally speaks!

After spending 17 years in the NHL, the last 3 of which he spent on Long Island Mike Sillinger hung up his skates for good yesterday ending a career in which this NHL journeymen played for a record setting 12 different teams throughout his career.

"Today is a sad day for my family and I, but it's a new beginning. I'm so grateful to have played so long in the NHL," Sillinger said. "I thank the organizations and teammates who made my career a great success. I'm leaving hockey with many accomplishments and memories."

Following two procedures on his left hip, Sillinger said “things did not feel right and it wasn’t due to old age or his body not healing right “ giving that as his only concern.

“We were very fortunate to have Mike as a member of our organization,” Snow said. “There will be a lasting effect with the impressions he made, especially on our young players.” But Garth snow has decided to fill the void from within but added “they are big shoes to fill.”

In other news the Islanders finally brought Rick Dipietro out of witness protection to address the unintentional challenge by Islanders point blank’s Chris Botta. The very next day after Botta posted on both his site and SNY the Islanders GM and Rick Dipietro called Islanders beat writer Katie Strang of Newsday to tell fans and the NHL world that Rick’s progress is right on schedule (whatever schedule that may be).

"So far, everything has been positive. I've done everything under the sun to get stronger and into better shape…….I'm going to come back and play when I'm 100 percent healthy. I'm not gonna make another mistake and rush myself back." Dipietro told Newsday over the phone.

He also mention his strict rehab schedule which they maintained all along and tried not to get away from. Rick also credits GM Garth Snow for adding depth at the position by signing Dwayne Roloson and Martin Biron.

The one thing of concern he mentioned in his interview with Newsday was he still has ambitions to play in the 2010 winter Olympics if he is healthy. "If I'm healthy……why would I not want to play?''
To answer your question Rick, SO YOU DON’T RE-INJURE YOURSELF! I understand the thrill and honor of representing ones country but right now your focus should be on coming back strong and healthy so you can live up to your contract and become a useful member of the Islanders (for other than looking pretty and signing autographs). So for now Rick is slowly coming back and he will be put back under lock and key to every fan and media member.

My Introduction and My first Blog

Hello everyone, my name is Eric Ritter and Christian A. has asked me to join the ranks of the Islanders Crazy Blog and I am very happy to do so. Some of you may recognize my name if you have seen any of my Youtube videos throughout last season, my channel name was TalkinHockey. Christian discovered me on there and asked that I join this blog and bring overall NHL coverage outside the normal Islanders he and other Long Island diehards post; and I will be happy to do so throughout the year. If you like my work, there are a few other places I'd like you to check out. One is hockeytube.com/us/ the domain owner for that website also discovered me on Youtube and ask that I be the NHL analyst for his site. It is a very new site and just launched and is still in its early stages, but as we get rolling closer towards the NHL season the site will start to take shape. The other place I'd like you to visit is my Twitter, please follow me at EricHockeytube. I promise no personal tweets, only short quips about the NHL that are noteworthy, but not necessarily deserving of an entire blog or video. Below is the first blog I would like to post on your site, it is about the San Jose Sharks and I wrote shortly after they were eliminated from the playoffs back in April. So while the main idea of the article/blog may be a bit outdated, the general idea/opinion is still there, plus it gives you all an idea of my writing style and ability. I look forward to any and all feedback, questions and comments and look forward to spending this season with the Islanders Crazy blog readers. Thanks for welcoming me, I'm quite happy to be aboard!

Time For San Jose Roster Renovation is Now

It seems as if heading into October each of the past three seasons, all you heard was that “this is San Jose’s year.” With a new head coach in rookie bench boss Todd McLellan and a face lifted defense, that was enough for prognosticators to overlook three straight years of second round playoff exits and proclaim the Sharks favorites to win the Stanley Cup in the 09 season.
And when you consider the start San Jose got off to, many doubters started to become believers.
The Sharks burst out of the gate going 16-3-1 in the first quarter of their 08-09 campaign. They shot to the top of the league standings and camped there most of the season.
Despite struggles during the third-quarter of their season, the Sharks pulled it together down the stretch, setting team records for wins (53), points (117) and winning the franchise’s first ever Presidents’ Trophy.
Heading into the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Shark fans and players alike felt confident with their opponent. Anaheim seemingly did its best down the stretch to not make the playoffs despite getting in as the eighth seed. The Sharks won the season series 4-2 over the Ducks and boasted 11 more wins and 26 more points than their California adversary.
But six games in, the Sharks were out.
After an abysmal start to the 05-06 season coming out of the NHL lockout, it took the acquisition of Joe Thornton to turn the team and the season around. Thanks mainly to the Thornton trade and solid goaltending by Evgeni Nabokov, San Jose made the postseason that year, and the next two years to follow.
The Sharks had been good for one series win each of the last three years, but had also been good for getting the boot in the second round.
So how could San Jose regress and not even win a series the same year they set franchise records and lead the league?
When Detroit eliminated San Jose from the playoffs in 2007, the speculation of a roster renovation in the offseason began. But the team kept its primary pieces together, only to again get eliminated in the second round by Dallas last year.
But rather than redoing the roster, former coach Ron Wilson was fired, and McLellan was brought in. Having been groomed under Mike Babcock in Detroit, Sharks Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson thought that the puck-possession style of play McLellan would teach the players would be more beneficial than blowing up the roster and starting over.
The success achieved in the regular season now means nothing since McLellan and the Sharks were sent home in the first round for the first time since 2001. The six game series loss gives San Jose a 20-21 playoff record since the lockout; a losing postseason record for a team that has won 197 games in the last four regular seasons.
The top players always receive the largest amount of blame, so fingers once again are likely to be pointed at the likes of Thornton, Jonathan Cheechoo and now former team captain Patrick Marleau, none of which are older than 30. The team as a whole is primarily young, the only two players on the opening roster that were over 35 were Jeremy Roenick and Rob Blake.
So, in a league where a large percentage of the superstars are under 25, why would San Jose want to have a fire sale and shake up the roster? The answer: Chemistry.
Chemistry is one of, if not the most important aspect of a hockey team. No matter how good a roster may look on paper, if there is no chemistry, there is no success. Just look at the rosters of the New York Rangers and Washington Capitals at the turn of the century for proof; all-star players littered their line up, but that still wasn’t enough to get either team close to the playoffs.
It’s apparent after four straight years of failure in the post season that San Jose has a group capable of great things during the regular season, but they also have a group that lacks the spark necessary to collectively raise one another’s game come April.
San Jose shouldn’t move any of the 25 and younger players on their roster, they are the true foundation. And Nabokov logically isn’t going anywhere. So revert to the aforementioned Thornton, Cheechoo and Marleau, trade them for pieces that could better benefit your team.
Thornton is one of the top set-up men and playmakers in the league, the type of center Columbus has been searching for to play with Rick Nash. Cheechoo can be a brilliant goal scorer; there's a team on Long Island that had trouble finding the back of the net last season, give them a call. And Marleau is a gritty veteran that can score but isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty. There’s a mess in Ottawa a leader like him could certainly help to clean up and San Jose has shown interest in Dany Heatley. Heatley for Marleau anyone?
Big disappointments calls for big change, and after four years, it’s time for San Jose to pull the trigger on some blockbuster deals that’ll shake up the appearance, and hopefully success, of the team. With a solid cast of young players on both offense and defense, and one of the best goalies in the league manning their net, San Jose may be just a trade, or three, away from finally bringing a Cup to the fans at the Shark Tank.

This week in Islanders hockey (and patrick Kane's arrest)

Well my first post in over a week was going to be purely about the recent Islanders news, but low and behold I head over to TSN.com to see the following headline, KANE ARRESTED. That’s right, Patrick Kane Chicago’s star center was arrested along with cousin for allegedly assaulting and robbing a cab driver this morning in his hometown of Buffalo, New York. This is just the latest in series of summer messes for the resurgent Blackhawks, who made it all the way to western conference finals this past season. The off-season is where things have started to unravel. From the NHL investigation into the mishandling of qualifying offer contracts, the firing of Dale Tallon as GM, the bust that may be the Marian Hossa signing, and the ensuing investigation into his 12 year contract. Now Kane has added another chapter to this off-season to forget for Blackhawks fans.

Now back to news from Long Island, last Tuesday RFA Blake Comeau signed a 2 year, one way after initially rejecting his qualifying offer for more money and a one way deal.

Tuesday was the big Lighthouse hearing at Hofstra university which was covered by every Isles/hockey blog except mine. I wont be writing about it because by now its been all covered. If you still want coverage check out the blogroll.

Next on the list is The Hockey News’s preseason predictions are being revealed one by one each day and on the first day of revealing the predictions THN has them last in the eastern conference. Although there points are pretty dead on about why they could finish last in the Atlantic division, they fail to convince me why they could finish last in the conference. With the improved goalie situation and the improvement in the Isles young players I don’t see why they couldn’t at least be ranked 12 or 13. THN writer Adam Proteau isn’t as glum about the Islanders as his colleagues are giving them a shot to land anywhere between 12 and 14 in the east.

This Saturday individual tickets for the Islanders season finally go on sale after much anticipation following the release of their schedule. It features the yearly favorite Islander-Ranger rivalry games, but this years hot ticket will be the home/season opener which is a match up that features the defending Stanley cup champion Pittsburg penguins. Oh and to make the game even bigger it will be John Tavares’s NHL debut.
Tickets go on sale at 10 am at the team stores in Hicksville and Massapequa and it will be a fun event to stop by and pick up tickets because sparky, a couple islander players and chances to win Islanders prizes will be going on all morning.

“Lighthouse at Long Island” Would Create More than 90,000 Jobs, Generate More than $70 Million in Annual Tax Revenue

Complex Would Also Keep New York Islanders Hockey Team on Long Island

Governor David A. Paterson today urged State and county agencies to expedite a multi-billion-dollar development project that will yield tremendous economic and recreational benefits for Nassau County and New York State. The Governor spoke from the future Lighthouse site and was joined by Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy, Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi, Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray, New York Islanders owner Charles Wang and other local officials.

“The Lighthouse Project has the potential to be one of the most important economic development initiatives we have ever seen on Long Island and is precisely the kind of economic stimulus that we need here,” Governor Paterson said. “That’s why I am directing our State agencies to expedite their review of this project. Our government agencies need to work diligently and swiftly to ensure that this project can move forward as quickly as possible so that we can begin to put people back to work right here on Long Island.”

The Lighthouse at Long Island is slated to transform the 150-acre Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum site into a mixed residential and commercial center, featuring a variety of housing, retail, shopping, athletic and entertainment venues. The project has been proposed by the Lighthouse Development Group, a joint venture between Charles B. Wang, Owner of the New York Islanders, and RXR, Long Island’s largest owner, manager and developer of commercial real estate.

The $3.74-billion project is expected to generate $71 million in annual tax revenues, create 75,000 construction and 19,000 permanent jobs. This mixed-use development will be designed to be Long Island’s largest Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), or certified environmentally friendly, project, transforming the Nassau Coliseum into a state-of-the-art arena that can accommodate 17,500 fans for hockey, 18,500 for basketball and 20,000 for concerts.

Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy said: “The Lighthouse presents a huge opportunity for Nassau County that will help grow our economy and create jobs. I am pleased that Governor Paterson has lent his support to this important project, which will be a major economic driver and create thousands of jobs. With the development of residential and commercial space, a large recreational park, and an improved sports and entertainment venue, the Lighthouse project will bring increased revenue to Long Island, attract new business, and place a spotlight on the Island for residents and visitors alike. Long Island needs the Lighthouse project and I am proud to stand with the Governor and call for the development of the project to be expedited so we can help rebuild Long Island.”

Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi said: “The Lighthouse can’t come soon enough for Nassau County and all of Long Island. This project will bring thousands of jobs to the area, breathing life into new suburbia and jump-starting our economy. Now, more than ever, we need everyone in government to work together to get this project done, and I thank Governor Paterson for his support.”

Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray said: “Hempstead town officials are focused on innovative and progressive development. The key in reviewing all development proposals of the magnitude of the Lighthouse project is to be thorough and complete in our work. After all, the decisions we make today will affect our children and grandchildren.”

Charles B. Wang, principal and founder of the Lighthouse Development Group and owner of the New York Islanders, said: “We appreciate the support and direction from Governor Paterson and look forward to the progress he will help foster between the State, Nassau County and the Town of Hempstead to finally bring certainty to this project by the start of the next hockey season. The Lighthouse will be a catalyst to kick-start the Long Island economy and will be a destination for all Long Islanders to live, work and play.”

The Town of Hempstead Board has scheduled a public hearing for August 4 and has invited community members to make official comments on the project.

The following quotes were provided in support of the Lighthouse at Long Island project:

Senator Brian X. Foley said: “As a member of the Senate Economic Development committee I see the importance of this project as an engine for the creation of jobs and expanding the tax base for the Long Island region. This will also enable sports franchises to stay on Long Island, providing recreational outlets for our Long Island residents.”

Senator Kemp Hannon said: “Whether you are a fan of the Islanders or fan of the economy, this is one project to root for.”

Senator Craig M. Johnson said: “The Lighthouse Project has the potential to significantly bolster Nassau’s economy and its tax base. We need to do everything we can -- especially in these tough economic times -- to ensure that this, and similar projects, are subjected to a thorough review process, but avoid becoming trapped in red tape.”

Assemblyman Robert D. Barra said: “The Lighthouse Project is the most important initiative of our time. The potential for job creation and tax revenue stability is astounding. We need this project to get Nassau County working again so we are not being taxed out of our homes, and to one day bring the Stanley Cup back to Long Island where it belongs.”

Assemblyman Charles Lavine said: “I am hopeful the Lighthouse project will become a reality because of the many benefits it will provide Long Island, including housing, retail space and thousands of jobs. This undertaking can be achieved only with the cooperation of State and county agencies and the input of residents. I am hopeful that when it is completed, Long Island will have a world class facility not only for professional hockey and arena football, but a concert venue that will replace the nearly four-decades-old Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.”

Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel said: “The Lighthouse Project has the ability to accomplish many of Nassau County's goals such as offering a variety of housing opportunities, promising economic development through new job creation, and significant mass transit upgrades. It would be a Long Island hat trick. I am proud to support Governor Paterson and County Executive Suozzi as they move forward on this project.”

Assemblyman Rob Walker said: “As one of the youngest members of the State legislature, I have seen firsthand the negative impact of the downturn in the economy particularly on those young people who cannot afford to live on Long Island anymore, including many in my own family. The need for common sense development is essential and I look forward to working with all levels of government to move this project forward in order to provide the economic boost that our region needs.”

Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg said: “Today’s announcement is a positive indication of progress that has included the cooperation of officials from State and local levels cooperating on a bipartisan basis to enhance the Long Island economy. With the input from the community, the Lighthouse development could provide much needed housing and retail space as well as much-needed new arena for Long Island’s signature sport franchise, the Islanders. My thanks to County Executive Suozzi and Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray for their leadership in coordinating this effort.”

Presiding Officer of the Nassau County Legislature Diane Yatauro said: “I am encouraged to see the Lighthouse project gaining significant support and momentum. This is a high priority for Nassau County. The Lighthouse will create jobs, stimulate our regional economy and revitalize our mid-Nassau business center. Executive Director of the Long Island Contractors Association Marc Herbst said: “The Lighthouse project is the perfect opportunity for a locally-driven stimulus for our regional economy. Our construction industry is suffering from 35-40 percent unemployment. Long Island should seize every opportunity to stimulate our economy, employ our workforce and deploy our skilled expertise to advance such locally important projects.”

Executive Director Eric Alexander of Vision Long Island, a Smart Growth planning organization, said: “Vision Long Island applauds Governor David Paterson and New York State agencies for expeditious review of the Lighthouse project. The Lighthouse is the premier Smart Growth project for Long Island and has the support of local business, civic and community leaders as well as Smart Growth advocates and planners. The Charles Wang, Mike Francesa interview finally happened today at 4 pm. It featured a lot of Lighthouse talk and some hockey talk for about what seemed like an hour (could be more, could be less). In retrospect it showed a few things about each person we did or didn’t know.
First off, Wang is still very confident that his Oct. 3rd deadline will be met with a positive green light for the project to continue. Wang explained the process and gave a nice “shout out” to the Town of Hempstead for a good job on going through the zoning approval. Charles also told Francesa that he is planning to attend the September 22 game in Kansas city but their has been no negotiation with Kansas city or any other Municipalities. Later as the talk shifted to hockey Wang let the cat out of the bag sort of speak revealing that head coach Scott Gordon has 2 years remaining on his contract with the Islanders. He is positive that the Islanders have a better team on the ice this year and is confident that there will be much improvement. When asked what his biggest regret was while owning the Isles Wang responds by surprisingly say that he regrets not hiring Garth Snow as the General Manager over Neil Smith the first time(interesting). Later on Wang Thanked the fans for their patients and tells them they are going to stick to the rebuild process.
There is way more to the interview than just that , Something Jim Baumbach of Newsday noticed today was that Mike Francesa knows nothing about the Lighthouse Project (something I already knew after calling one time to correct him about wrong information he said on the air in which he proceeded to tell me I’m wrong). Baumbach wrote this in his article on the interview:

“Francesa really knows very little about the Lighthouse Project and the issues surrounding it. He also seems to pushing Kate Murray's talking point that he should rebuild Nassau Coliseum instead of the Lighthouse Project. Which leaves out the fact that Nassau County owns the Coliseum, not Wang. Francesa has as much right to re-do the Coliseum as Wang does“

IM GLAD SOMEONE FINALLY SAID IT! Mike Francesa started by mention the light rail system (which is non existent in the project) and was immediately corrected by Charles Wang who said that is not a part of this project. This is the issue I battled with Francesa over, Where he told me I was wrong, wouldn’t let me get my point across and cut me off so he could go on god for saken rant on a subject he even admitted to know little about!( sorry that still makes me angry even a couple months later.) Anyway moving back to the interview Francesa touched upon the idea of just an arena and we all know why so I will not go into why its not economically feasible or how the county doesn’t have the money to renovate or build a new arena. Later Francesa asks (with his usual nasty tone) “why are you playing a game in Kansas City?” Wan responded simply and gentlemanlike because the LA kings wanted us to play them there and the game was no way intended to be a threat, in fact it was scheduled prior to all the Lighthouse downturn during the winter months. Throughout the interview Francesa made factual mistakes or misread information. At one point the misspoke (or actually thought) there was a hearing on Oct 3, which is the deadline Charles Wang has set for a ya or nay on the project . Wang quickly corrected him yet again and said he is optimistic that they will get a green light for the project. Also later on Francesa misread an Newsday article and kept saying Dipietro could miss the season and when he asked Wang he seemed shocked by even the mention of that. Wang later said DP is on course and "some of these media reporters should be GMs they seem to know more.” Once again Newsday’s Jim Baumbach had an opinion on Mike’s miscue:

“Francesa misinterpreted Arthur Staple's column today, repeatedly mentioning a story that said DiPietro could miss the season. Don't know where Francesa read that. Not here. Wang basically said, "What are you talking about?" Francesa then read the beginning of Staple's column without ever mentioning what he was reading or what paper it was from”

I also got the feeling at times that even though Francesa admittedly knows little about the project he seems to have an opinion already formulated in his head. Near the end of the interview Francesa called the Lighthouse “outrageously expensive” , I mean don’t get me wrong $3.7 billion is a lot of money, but Francesa makes it seem like the whole project is outrages. The Hot headed Mike Francesa that we all know but may not love also showed up for a brief appearance while debating Charles Wang. The brief debate happened as Mike said he feels there are enough people on Long Island but got the statistics wrong and was once again corrected by Wang and disagreed on what Long Island’s identity is and what it should be. It was finally wrapped up by Wang saying that after Oct 3 all options are on the table including a possible refurbished or new Nassau coliseum ( just to name one) but, that he is still confident they will get a positive answer on the deadline.
At points this may have seemed like I may have bashed Mike Francesa but that was not my intention. He is a highly respected media personality in NY sports and knows a lot too. Hockey and the Lighthouse really aren’t things he knows a lot about as Jim Baumbach and I have noticed during the interview with his slip ups in information and his misinterpretation of Newsday’s hockey writer. Im glad that Charles Wang finally got on WFAN and gave some more press to the Islanders and the Lighthouse project. I also give credit to Mike Francesa although wrong and at times hot headed, for at least trying today understand some more about the Project, even promising Charles Wang that he will look into the project more and if he sees it helps Long Island he will become a supporter. BREAKING NEWS: Islanders sign Martin Biron

Breaking News: The New York Post is reporting that the Islanders have singed free agent Goalie Martin Biron to a 1 year deal worth $1.4 million. The 32 year old would be the second pro goalie the Islanders have signed and the second biggest free agent signing since the signing of Dwayne Roloson. Biron went 29-19-5 with a 2.76 GAA last season while sharing duty with Antero Nittymaki and helped lead the team to the playoffs last season before loosing to Pittsburg in the opening round. This could be a sign that Rick Dipietro, the franchise goalie who was drafted 1st overall in 2000 might take longer than expected to comeback to full health this upcoming season.

Islanders let go of their radio broadcast team

Today The Islanders let go of their radio broadcast team in what has been called a cost cutting move. Steve Mears and Chris king who have been worked the radio booth together for the last 3 season were let go and next season the Isles radio broadcast will feature a TV simulcast of Billy Jaffe and Howie Rose. The simulcast which will start next season is similar to the simulcast agreement which MSG has with the Buffalo Sabres. King told Newsday’s Greg Logan that the Islanders have offered him a position in the Islanders pre and post game shows and a possibility of a full time position in the organization. Also MSG will not renew C.J Papa’s contract and no replacement has been announced (could it be Chris King?) Many fans have weighed in calling the decision sad and calling the Islanders a classes organization, Yes its sad that they lost their jobs but to the Islanders classless is a stretch. A hockey team is a business and sometimes business have to cut costs and good people loose their jobs ( especially in today’s world). They are also both professionals and know its nothing personal. Also this isn’t another sign that the Islanders are moving anywhere as some fans might speculate. Just because a team changes it’s staff up doesn’t mean they are getting ready to pack up the trucks and leave. One thing I will miss from the Mears, King broadcast was the post game shows at Doolin’s Pub, hopefully they will somehow keep that going in one way or another.

Islanders have NOT contacted Alex Tanguay!!!

In other Islander news Islanders Independent is reporting that the Islanders management has NOT contacted Alex Tanguay’s camp. Contrary to several reports on Hockey Buzz and Islanders Independent, Gallof spoke with Bob Sauve, Tanguay’s agent who said that any call to the Islanders has not been responded to and that the Islanders have not contacted them. The news of Tanguay possible going to L.I broke last week as many of the big names were swiped off of free agency early on and after Alexei Kovalev was signed by the senators on July 6th . Now that Tanguay may or may not be on the Islanders radar, it leaves this question in the minds of many fans: WHAT IS GOING ON?

John Tavares faces the ultimate test in season opener

It’s official John Tavares has signed to a 3 year entry level contract with the New York Islanders. Tavares, the first overall pick in last months draft said “I’m excited to officially become a part of the New York Islanders organization and begin my professional career this upcoming season.” Tavares will be thrown right into the mix this upcoming as his first NHL game will be against Sidney Crosby and the defending Stanley Cup champion penguins October 3rd at the Coliseum. In what will be the most highly anticipated season opener for the Islanders in a very long time, expect for a major national interest in Tavares’s first game and how well he holds up playing with the big boys. The rest of the schedule can be found at the Islanders website. If all goes well for Tavares and the Isles you can maybe foresee NBC and the NHL broadcast crew making a few trips the old barn in Hempstead this season.

Prospect Camp- Open to the public day.

Today’s mini camp, the only one that was open to the general public was fun, exciting and left much to be desired. That may be the most confusing sentence iv written but let me explain. Fans arrived at 5 AM and continued to show up throughout the morning before and as the isles staff handed out the wrist bands to get into Ice Works, then were left to wait another hour and half to get in. So as I caught up with some old friends who I haven’t seen since the end of the season a lady apparently fainted from overheating while waiting outside. This was the only really bad part of the day besides the fact they snuck Tavares out the back door, so all the fans who had come out to meet him and get autographs went home without his. Now that I have quickly vented lets get down to Tavares’s first skate in front of a packed house of Islanders fans. Well it was less than impressive. Tavares who played a few shifts really wasn’t the offensive power house that fans have come to expect out of him. Tavares did blend into the background and at times I had to ask my friend Larry where’s Tavares? But understandably we have to cut this 18 year old kid some slack since he’s just that, an 18 year old kid. Also adding that this was a mini camp scrimmage and a time to learn the new system for the team he will be playing with next season. In the media scrum following today’s camp when one reporter asked what Tavares needs to work on he responded by saying “everything…….you can never be a perfect player.”

In other news from today a lot people were impressed by the “bulkier” Josh bailey who did extremely well in the face off circle including in several match ups against Tavares, also scored a goal in today’s scrimmage. Josh who had experienced much of what Tavares is going through (minus the constant media attention) has been showing john around long Island and forging a friendship to help ease his transition.

Although I didn’t get to meet Tavares or get on TV it was a fun time and wish the camp had been open more than once. Ill have pics up on the Islanders Crazy flickr, maybe myspace and probably on this site by tomorrow.

Lighthouse, Press Confrence, and Prospect camp all in one week!!

Its been nearly 3 months since the last puck hit the ice at the Nassau Coliseum, yet in the second week of July Islanders hockey news is still abundantly present. This Tuesday begins a week of Islander related events starting with the vote on the completeness of the Draft Generic Environmental Impact Statement that was submitted by the Lighthouse Group. The vote will mark a major milestone towards the completion of the Lighthouse project, which was stalled due to ongoing political rhetoric between developers, town and county government. But following a successful meeting between Charles Wang, Tom Suozzi, and Kate Murray in which they agreed to work together to expedite approvals for the project. All readers are encouraged to attend this important meet to help preserve Long Island’s future and Islanders hockey. Following Tuesdays Lighthouse festivities, Wednesday will feature Tavares Fest part 2 at the Nassau Coliseum. The Islanders organization will be holding a press conference to formally introduce John Tavares as an Islander and will probably hand him his number 91 Vintage blue Islanders jersey that he will be wearing for the 2009-2010 season. The event is open to the public and should have a healthy turn out of fans and an even healthier turn out of New York and Canadian media, a turn out that hasn’t been seen since the Islanders acquired Ryan Smyth at the trade deadline back in 2007. Unfortunately due to work I will not be able to attend the press conference, but hope to have someone their to give a first hand account of this installment of Tavares Fest.This Thursday marks the beginning of Islanders Prospect camp at Islanders Ice Works, but this years camp will not be open to the public except for Sunday July 12th. The decision to only open one day off camp to fans has confused and upset some fans who were looking forward to attending camp to see prospects who will be in the Islanders system (most just wanna see Tavares though). So with Sunday being the only open day expect it to be packed to capacity as even the Islanders are warning fans to come early. The doors open at 10:45 AM and admission is a first-come, first-serve basis. Along with the prospects on the ice, the Islanders are making this a big event sending over the I.C.E Tour, Sparky and the Ice Girls something which wasn’t featured at last years prospect camp. Islanders Crazy will be on hand for what should be a fun filled day to see first hand the newest members of the Islanders organization. Even though hockey season is over, the Islanders have managed to keep their name in the paper and this week should be the same as a plethora of Islanders news will be made this week.

Free agent Signings (so far)

When GM Garth Snow said their would be no big name signings this off season he meant it. The Only big name to join the Islanders roster so far was a desperately needed 1-a goalie by the name of Dwayne Roloson. The 40 year old net minder who played 63 games last season for the Edmonton Oilers put up a .910 save % , and a 2.77 GAA. When asked, Dominik of Lighthouse Hockey gave this opinion on the signing of Dwayne Roloson:
“I'm fine with Roloson. Obviously, in a vacuum he's not the most ideal option. But considering the Islanders are only offering a job with the caveat of a) backing up DiPietro if he's healthy and b) not sticking around for long if he ever does get healthy, Roloson is a good fit. I doubt Anderson would have taken that role, and certainly Biron and Khabibulin wouldn't have. Roloson, though old, has more legit starting experience than Anderson, Clemmensen, or Conklin.”
Roloson admitted if the Oilers had offered him a second year he would have stayed. The Signing of Roloson finally brings a reliable goaltender to back up Rick Dipietro if/when he gets re injured, now all the Islanders have to do is fix everything else.

The following day Snow add depth to the Isles farm system by signing goalie Scott Munroe, LW Jeremy Reich, and defensemen Brett Westgarth.

UNIONDALE, NY, July 2, 2009 -- The New York Islanders announced today that they have agreed to terms with three players. Goaltender Scott Munroe, left wing Jeremy Reich and defenseman Brett Westgarth all have signed one-year, two-way contracts.

Munroe, an undrafted goalie from Moose Jaw, SASK, has been a part of the Philadelphia Flyers organization for the past four seasons. He received his first call-up to the National Hockey League last year with the Flyers. The 27-year-old net-minder posted a career year last season with a record of 31-19-0-4, a save percentage of .926 and four shutouts. Munroe led the Phantoms to the Calder Cup Playoffs in each of the past two seasons. During the 2008 Calder Cup Playoffs, Munroe made 65 saves in a five overtime contest against the Albany River Rats to earn the victory in the longest game in American Hockey League history.

Reich has played in a total of 99 NHL games scoring two goals and four assists while compiling 161 penalty minutes. The Craik, SASK native has been a part of the Boston Bruins organization for the past three years and played under Islanders head coach Scott Gordon his first two seasons with the team's AHL affiliate, the Providence Bruins. Last season, the 6'1", 196 pound left wing, served as the team captain of Providence, setting single-season career high numbers of 21 goals and 13 assists for 34 points in 76 games. Reich was originally drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the second round (39th overall) of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft.

Westgarth played the last three seasons in the AHL. Last year, the 6'2", 215 pound defenseman played for the Worcester Sharks, AHL affiliate of the San Jose Sharks, scoring nine points (2 goals and 7 assists) while totaling 137 penalty minutes. Westgarth, a native of Amhertsburg, ON, is a Princeton University graduate who skated for the Tigers from 2002-2007 where he compiled four goals and 20 assists for 24 points

Today wasn’t much different as the Islanders signed defensive prospect Mark Flood formerly of the Albany River Rats. Flood was 6-15-31 in 76 games with the River Rats. He had 10 goals in 53 games in ‘07-08. Greg Mauldin Was also signed today, maudlin was formerly of the Binghamton Senators. Along with that Hockey Buzz is reporting that the Islanders are interested in signing Alexei Kovalev.

John Tavares graced the mound this evening to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at citi field. Tavares steped out to cheers and few boos according to newsday. The number one pick came out wearing a new york Mets jersey (whether or not he actually is a met fan is hard to know)but he did grow up a Toronto Blue Jays fan and hates the Yankees. This is just the start of what will probably be a very eventful summer for the 18 year old hockey phenom.

Today Islanders Crazy will give our readers some insight into the known and unknown names of the Islanders draft selections from this weekend. From Tavares who no one needs to look him up to the High Schooler Anders Lee who not only is a talented hockey player but can also hold his own on the gridiron. So now we will profile 5 of the 7 picks made this weekend by the New York Islanders.

John Tavares- The 6’0” ft center from Oakville, Ontario was the consensus pick by everyone. After receiving “exceptional player” status he allowed be drafted at the age of 14 and won rookie of the year in 2006 as 15 year old. Tavares broke the OHL record for goals in a season with 72 as a 16 year old. Won back to back gold medals with team Canada. He is a player that will bring draw a crowd to the coliseum and make every game an interesting. Described by central scouting as “an offensive player who is reliable in his defensive zone and getting better at that, but yet not asked to do that very frequently. He is pure offense and for his first years in the NHL will probably be asked to do just that." Pierre McGuire of TSN said after the Islanders drafted Tavares “the Islanders now become a team you wanna watch.”

Calvin de Hann- Played his first season in the OHL this past season and finished second in the OHL among rookie defensemen with 68 points and scored 6 goals. He played for team Canada in the under-18 championship getting in 6 assists and having a plus six rating in six games. Hockey’sfuture.com says “de Haan is a solid offensive defenseman who makes an excellent first pass and runs the power play. de Haan's greatest attribute is his outstanding skating. His fluid stride and quick feet allow him to play sound positional defense -- and make up for any mistakes he may make. Physicality isn't his strong suit right now with his slight frame, but he makes excellent decisions with the puck and interviewed well at the NHL Combine.” Some also say de Hann was a powerful one-two punch on the power play along side John Tavares.

Mikko Koskinen- The 6’5” Finnish goalie who was taken 1st in the 2nd round adds much needed depth to the goalie position. A big presence in front of the net Koskinen posted a 1.91 goals-against average and a .931 save- percentage. Hockey’sfuture.com say “Koskinen’s greatest asset is his size, which he uses to seemingly fill the entire net and he covers a lot of space in the butterfly. He is inexperienced in terms of the number of games played and has not had a lot of international experience – excelling in the SM-Liiga where he ordinarily does not see the booming slapshots or accurate snipers more common in North America. Still learning as a goaltender, he must work to improve his quickness and foot speed. Very good at anticipating chances and setting himself to limit scoring opportunities. Quality teammate who has earned the respect of the veteran players in Espoo.“ According to Islanders Point Blank, Peter Mannino was not offered a Qualifying Offer which opens room for Koskinen to head to Bridgeport next season.

Casey Cizikas- Picked 92nd by the Islanders and was rated 92nd by central scouting the 5’10” center from Toronto Played 2 years with Mississauga St. Michael's of the OHL put up 16 goals last season with 20 assists. Hockey Prospect calls him “A player who has a solid all around game and does a lot of things right. He has decent offensive skills, putting up 18 goals and 41 points in his rookie season in the OHL last year. He is capable of far more offensively. He is a great passer, has great skating ability and a knack for finding room for himself. This player is definitely very crafty with the puck when pressured. He also has a very nice set of hands and should shoot a little more than he does. He does need to get a little stronger in his upper body, to be able to better battle in traffic. He’s a good solid prospect who at 5-11, 185 lbs will get a little more filled out. We like his upside.” Wouldn’t expect to see him with the big club for a few years.

Anders Lee Not only a gifted hockey player Anders Lee is an extremely intelligent person, possessing a 3.97 grade point average in school. Playing for Edina High in Minnesota Lee posted 20 goals in 25 games in his final season at Edina. A man-child (Hockey’s future’s words not mine) Lee is 6’2” and a whapping 210lb Hockey’sfuture.com says “He is exceedingly strong on his skates and quite mobile. What stands out about Lee’s skating however is the great balance and agility that he has for such a big man. He also has some speed to go with it. Lee utilizes his large frame, strength and long reach to great advantage. He is not only a difficult player to move off of the puck, but he can also power his way through the opposition’s checks too. He is very strong along the boards and in the corners. Where Lee’s use of his size and strength are particularly noticeable are in his relentless drives to the net and in protecting the puck. He can also deliver some bone-jarring hits as well. One of Lee’s greatest attributes is his very heavy shot. He can get pucks to the net and gets his shots off very quickly. He is a smart player who competes hard and sees the ice remarkably well. He is defensively responsible and is a competent penalty killer. An area where Lee really excelled this season with Edina was on face-offs. He possesses nice hands and is very poised with the puck. While his passing skills are good, it’s an area that can and should improve with maturity and development.” Lee is also a talented football prospect that was recruited by some notable schools such as Harvard, Denver and Minnesota but turned them down to go play hockey at the university of Notre Dame.

Tavares fest review

Tavares fest is just begging and it reached it’s peak Friday night. As 10,000 fans packed the coliseum for the Islanders draft party to see who the Islanders would pick first, it was clear who the fans wanted and his name was John…….damn what’s his name? Oh ya John Tavares. The doors opened at 5:30 and the one and a half hour wait was tough. Oddly though as I walked up the stairs I saw a sign that seemed way out of place for a Tavares party,
The sign which hung in section 214 read: “ Hey Garth Use Your Brain & Draft Duchene.” After that it was all Tavares love which was every where from fan signs to the Organist playing a John Tavares chant (which nearly 95% of the arena participated in). So as Tavares fest, I mean the draft party proceeded NHL videos of Duchene and Hedman were met with a choir of boos from the crowd along with any image of Brian Burke (who in my mind deserved to have his over inflated self image booed.) When 7:15 rolled around, the fans were sitting in seats as they watched Snow take the podium. With a small teaser pause, snow said John Tavares and the coliseum exploded as if they had just one the Stanley cup. Fans jumped, screamed, hugged and were joyous to watch as they were finally rewarded for sticking it out with this team through all the bad times (and boy were there many.) Fans flocked to purchase ticket Packages, season tickets, and Tavares Merchandise. As the excitement of Tavares fest started to whined down snow made another aggressive yet confusing move that stunned many fans. Snow picked up the number 12 pick and with that they took Oshawa General Calvin de Hann. A choice that snow felt was going to be gobbled up by a team picking in front of the Isles. Although de Hann was also chosen in the first it was undoubtedly Tavares who stole the show for Islander fans. The Islanders top pick will throw out the opening pitch in tonight’s Mets vs. Yankees game at Citi Field. The reception of his presence at the game should be interested since he’ll be in ranger territory.

The next 8 hours will be longest of every islander fans life. Last night i felt more like a kid on Christmas eve than a hockey fan waiting to who their team picks.so as part one of this agonizing wait is over here come part 2. so to help pass the time Islanders Crazy will once again run down this for this evening Islanders draft party. As you all may know i will be there blogging live via my phone. so we could experience some technical difficulties, but i do have back up plans (that's what i spent my sleepless night doing). I hope to start blogging precisly at 5:30. CJ papa will host the draft party this year will begin around 6:30 with his stuff. The rumor from hockey Buzz, the one where the Isles might fly in their top pick to the coliseum to meet the fans is only a rumor and i have evidence that there is any truth to it, just posted it due to the lack of post since Wednesday. With over 22,000 tix given out, possibility of pissing off many of those 22,000 and the sale of acohol should make for an extreamly interesting evening to say the least.

Well last night Islanders Crazy finally confirmed plans for what will be an extremely fun and exciting weekend during this years NHL Entry Draft. So with that here is the Islanders Crazy Official Draft weekend Schedule:

Friday June 26 at 5:30 PM: Along side thousands of Islander fans, Islanders Crazy will blog live from the New York Islanders Draft Party at the Coliseum. I will be blogging all night long with all the action, excitement and breaking news that happens. Unfortunately my request to speak with players has been denied due to the demand but will relay what the Islanders personal at the draft and the first round pick tell Islander fans as they address them live through out the evening and I’ll speak with the fans to gage their reaction to the selections and news that happened during the first round. Along with all the exciting action from the coliseum, we will be joined by Doug of New York Islanders Official Outlook periodically through out the evening live from the draft in Montreal with commentary on the action that’s happening there. With that its finally time that Islanders Crazy jumps on the band wagon and makes its official draft prediction. It is my personal opinion that the Islanders select John Tavares first overall. Although Duchene has risen in the prospect pool in the last couple of weeks, I feel the Islanders will take the pure goal scorer over the 2-way forward. Along with all the upsides to Tavares (that I don’t need to go into detail with since you all know it by now), there is the extreme lengths the Islanders sales department has gone to promote this years draft party. If it wasn’t Tavares then id think they would have tried to keep it light and not risk a riot.This is just a quick opinion in not much detail, after the weeks and weeks i think i dont need to go into full detail since its been said and said. Islanders Crazy will hold its first live blog from the New York Islanders Draft Party at the Nassau Coliseum. I am still working out the details, but so far here is what will go down on Friday: I will begin blogging at 5:30 as the doors open up for the party. I will go around give a lay of the land, describe the activities going on, and speak with some Islander fans. During this time I may go and take a walk through of the locker room during the lull in news. At 6:30 I will make my way back to listen to C.J Papa and Tim Jackman as they take the stage. During which time I will be videoing as Jackman talks and later as Bossy, Trottier, and Nystrom take the stage. At 7 the Islanders turn on the Broadcast of the NHL Draft and I go into over drive trying to get in last minute info and opinion from fans on the floor. At 7:15 the Islanders make the pick and at 7:30 That player will be interviewed live on the jumbo tron(both will be available to view on the Islanders Crazy You Tube page later after the live blog ends). Following the interviews, I will try to speak with Tim, Bossy, Nystrom, and Trottier to get their thoughts on the Islanders draft pick and their thoughts on the previous and upcoming season. Depending on any changes in draft order Ill go back to watching the jumbo tron as at 9 the Interviews return with Islanders hockey personal and later as they make the 26th selection. I will rap things up from the Coliseum around 10 o’clock with videos and synopsis to come later that evening or the next morning. Dean Chynoweth is officially named as Assistant coach

Former Islanders first round pick and head coach/ GM of the Swift Currant Dean Chynoweth was officially named as the new assistant coach. After resigning his position yesterday, Islander insiders Chris Botta and Greg Logan got word from sources that he was the new assistant coach.Chynoweth who only played a short time in the NHL, then began a succesfull coaching career in 1998 with the Utah Grizzles. Spent 2 years in Utah before leaving to coach for the Seattle Thunderbirds of the WHL for 5 years.

Last year when the Islanders dropped down to the 9th overall pick, skipped over Nikita Filatov, and picked relatively unknown Josh Bailey fans were up in arms and stormed out of the Islanders Draft party. A year later it looks like the Islanders made the right decision to pass up on the Russian born Filatov. Filatov was thought to be by most fans as the new franchise player (oh little did we know) and when Snow passed up may of them questioned Snows GM skills. Now that we look back at this season, Nikita Filatov was seldom ever mentioned this year and only played in 6 games in Columbus. Playing in 4 games in October and 4 in January. Scored only 4 goals, put up only 4 points, had no assists and was only +/- 3. Although Bailey was a -14 (not that I really understand the +/- system) Bailey had nearly twice the goals, 18 times the assists, and 5 times the points (25) it is my unwavering opinion that the Islanders made the right choice to draft Bailey. Although he started rough Bailey has mixed well into the Islanders system. To say Filatov was a bust would be unfair but should the Isles have drafted him they would have missed out on an exceptional player who has a promising future in the NHL and as Islander. So coming back to this years if Snow doesn’t draft Tavares there is a reason. The past has shown that Snow and his team know what their doing and have the ability to see past all the hype and find a talented young player.

Although Garth Snow said on NHL Live yesterday that Rick Dipietro will be back skating in August and ready for training camp in September, the thought is still that the Islanders need a more experienced back up or what some bloggers have called a 1a goalie. From looking back at last season this player should be prepared to play a large number of games due to Rick’s unpredictable injuries. So with that the general concusses for a 1a goalie is upcoming free agent Craig Anderson (formally) of the Florida Panthers. The 28 year old net minder is a reliable player the Islanders can utilize during DP’s off days and/or the days he’s injured. Anderson played in 31 games for the panthers with 15 wins and an impressive .924% saves. Anderson set an NHL record 53 saves in a shut out ironically against the Islanders. To compare, Yann Danis who played in the same amount of games as Craig Anderson had a worse record (10-17-3 compared to Andersons 15-7-5), and had a better save percentage. Joey MacDonald’s save percentage was lower compared to Andersons, bur its hard to gage the other stats since MacDonald played 18 less games than Macdonald and Anderson. With a solid back up/starter Like Craig Anderson in place it gives the Islanders another piece of the puzzle in their rebuild.

Bill Guerin back to Long Island?

For some odd reason Hockeybuzz.com keeps perpetuating the idea that Bill Guerin may return to Long Island for another season. My personal belief he will not come back to the Islanders. Why? You may ask, first off his distain for coach Scott Gordon’s new system he implemented at the start of last season. Not fully flourishing in the new system the rumor is that Guerin was open to trade within close range to Long Island so not to uproot his family. A well respected and classy player Guerin is and how well he did with the penguins I would not hold my breath to see Billy in an Isles uniform next season. I for see him resigning with the pens since he has no intentions of retiring this year. I respect the opinion of Eklund and Hockey Buzz, but feel this opinion is incorrect. We will just have to see come the beginning of the free agency signing period.

Bill Guerin and the Penguins are the Champs!!

If there was anyone who deserved to win the Stanley cup last night it was former captain Bill Guerin. The man who stuck it with the Islanders for one and a half tough season raised the cup for just the second time in his NHL career. One of the NHL’s classiest players, Guerin was traded at the deadline to the penguins and made an impact on the team. Guerin and the penguins got past the Flyers in a six game set with a game 2 game winning goal by Guerin himself. In the Semis it was a battle of the superstars as it was Ovechkin vs. Crosby. The penguins took it to 7 as they edged out the Capitals in a 6-2 win in the final game. In the Conference finals They annihilated the surging Hurricanes sweeping them in 4 games. In the Cup finals Coming back from a 2-0 deficit the penguins won games 3 and 4 to tie the series, but they would loose game 5 in a dismal 5-0 lose at the Joe. Back at the Igloo the Penguins won 2-1 and in game 7 the Pens sealed the deal winning their first cup since 1992. To sum it up, Congratulations Bill Guerin and the Penguins on your Stanley Cup championship.

MLB and NHL draft, What a difference

Tonight was Major League Baseball’s version of a draft, and boy was it BORING! Held in a sound studio at MLB network, their draft felt more like a board meeting than draft. Each of the 30 teams sent reps to sit at a table and essentially smile for the cameras. Unlike the NHL draft, which will be held in 2 weeks there are no fans, no players come up when their name is called and virtually no atmosphere. So with some of my favorite qualities about televised drafts none existent in the MLB’s version I was to say the least bored. I personally love to watch and hear the fans reactions, the players and families reactions when they are drafted and the overall atmosphere it has. So after watching this lackluster excuse for a draft it makes me all the more anxious for the NHL draft.

Roy Boe passes away at the age of 79

Sad news today as Roy Boe passed away at the age of 79. Roy Boe was responsibel for brining professional hockey to Long Island and owned the Islanders from their conception in 1972 to 1978 and owned the Sound Tigers up until 2005 when he sold them to Wang. Boe was beloved member of Islanders and Sound Tigers history. He will be miss greatly and Islanders Crazy extends heartfelt condolences to the entire Boe family.

Just A Thought: Whyd we ditch Osgood and what if he was still here?

As I sat watching the Red Wings shut out Sidney Crosby and the penguins, I thought back to the days when Osgood wore that number 35 jersey in orange and blue and chants of Ozzi rang down from the rafters at the Coliseum. On September 8th, 2001 the Islanders picked up Chris Osgood in the waiver draft to replace the aging John Vanbiesbrouck in net. Osgood helped lead the islanders back to the playoffs for the first time since the 93-94 season and was part of one the most memorable playoff series in franchise history. After the successful 2001-2002 campaign Osgood expressed his desire to extend his stay on Long Island, but since the success he had on the ice Osgood was looking for more money. What happened next is another example of former GM Mike Millbury’s pure stupidity, Millbury low balled a number: 3 years at an average of $3 mill. On the advice of his agent Osgood rejected the offer and the never got an extension before training camp. Osgood’s decision haunted him all year and on the day of the trade deadline Millbury dumped him to the Blues. As he worked out on the ice with the previous games scratches TSN finally broke the news Osgood to the Blues for Justin papineau and that day changed the course of Islanders hockey. Rick DiPietro took over goal duties and the team has been in a bind ever since. The injury prone DiPietro has crippled the team (goalie wise) as his inconsistent play at times and weeks of time spent on the bench injured have forced the Islanders to play every back up goalie they can (especially this season). But when he’s healthy and in the zone he’s very good. But what would have happened if Osgood stayed, would we be playing playoff hockey? Would we be in a rebuild? Would we know the fate of our team? The answers we will never know, but watching him tonight and seeing how he’s won the cup once and may win it again if things work out for the Red Wings it makes me wish Osgood was still an Islander. Lighthouse Brightens the day!

On this ugly, rainy day a beckon of light beamed through the clouds courtesy of the Lighthouse. As corny as that was its true, as the meeting held today between Wang, Rechler, Suozzi, and Murray went even better than anyone could imagine. At one point group were holding hands as they agreed to work together to speed up the approval process, maybe even being able to get Wang a decision by his Oct. 3 deadline. Murray also announced that the draft impact environmental statement will be signed off by the town board at the July 7th meeting. The group also plans to have a timetable of the approvals and make it public within the next 10 days. We enter the weekend of June 5th on a high note as everyone seems to be more than willing to finally site down and work together. With more progress promised and the backing of the Governor of the State of New York backing the project and will to help it finally seems like fans can start to breath a sigh of relief that maybe their team will be her for many years to come.

Too good to be true?

It seems like a century ago that we were ready to pack up and head out to one of the five boroughs. Today more good news transpired from a meeting with Governor David A. Paterson as he expressed his support for the Lighthouse Project. Paterson has reportedly assigned a member of his staff to be a liaison to help expedite the process. Also the Governor will help obtain funds for state road to help mitigate traffic concerns. Even Kate Murray seems to coming along tell Newsday that she’s going to ask Mr. Wang's permission to send the Lighthouse's environmental report to state agencies so they can start their review. The almost 360 degree turn which has come this week has offered cautious optimism to Islander fans, something that fans could use as they continue to speculate who the team will draft on June 26th. Tomorrow Lighthouse principles Charles Wang, Scott Rechler, Town supervisor Kate Murray, and County executive Tom Suozzi will meet tomorrow in the Suozzi’s office to discuss the process of the project which once again is a step in the right direction. With all the major players sitting down to talk, fans can have some hope that maybe they will someday meet at the Lighthouse

Brooklyn we go small

Back in 2001 Mayor Rudolph Giuliani left his mark on Brooklyn(for better or worse) when he brought baseball back to the borough in the form of the Cyclones and promised to help revitalize the area with private investment. Well it seems like Bruce Ratner is helping out a little, now 8 years later Ratner is playing into that theory as he is trying to revitalize the downtown area including building a brand new arena for the Nets of the NBA who currently reside in the IZOD center. With the situation on the Island being uncertain and the recent court victory for Ratner, fans have now plotted Brooklyn on their wish lists for alternative homes of Islanders hockey. But the notion that Brooklyn could be the new home for hockey might not be a reality anymore. Today Bruce Ratner announced the dismissal Frank Gehry as the architect of the Barclays center. The reason, the $1 billion design became too expensive and they opted for the cheaper $800 million design by Ellerbe Becket, an architectural firm based in Kansas City, Mo. (isn’t that ironic). The new design is a cross between Consaco Fieldhouse and an airplane hanger(odd very odd). The former arena architect Frank Gehry who was born in Toronto and is a hockey fan himself told the New York Times back in January 2006, while speaking to challenges of the design Gehry said "how do you make it come alive for the game and solve the problem of identity for this basketball team and I hope someday a hockey team." But with Gehry out and Becket in the room for hockey has been subsequently eliminated. According to Norman Oder of the Atlantic Yards Report with Gehry’s design gone for a smaller one has left the room for professional hockey out. Oder later on says in his post “But the failure to leave space, at least, for hockey means one potential source of additional tax revenues--and arena activity--would be precluded. So Ratner's decision might not benefit the city and state in the long-term.” Hopefully not to many fans were banking on Brooklyn too much as a possible home for Islanders hockey because today’s news might just have sent the Barclays center “outta here.” With the economy ruining everything the Atlantic Yards project isn’t immune from it either and the arena size is dwindling along with hope that the Islanders would stay should the Lighthouse fail.

John Tavaares: media Time line (sort of)

As draft day draws closer the debate continues and the “experts” up in Toronto continually talk about John Tavares’s flaws and how the Islanders should consider trading the 1st pick. The timing of the criticism can be called coincidental or intentionally started after the islanders secured the first round pick at the draft lottery held on April 14th. But the controversy started before the lottery as Leafs GM Brian Burke stood in front of the Toronto media and proclaimed his love for Tavares, igniting a firestorm of reports of how the Leafs can pull off such a move to gain Tavares. The day after the Burke paraded in front of the media reveling he had spoken to both the Lightning GM and Islanders GM Garth Snow. The same day Snow went on to Leafs Lunch to explain the Isles draft procedure. The next issue that arose was the out of the blue criticism from various scouts and media outlets( notable all of the Canadian media.) Red Line scouting ranked Victor Hedman higher than Tavares and added Matt Duchene as a more serious contender as a choice for the Islanders. The criticisms have continued about Tavares’s skating and other aspects of his game and this past week The Hockey News blogger Rory Boylen suggesting the Islanders trade the pick. In the article, Boylen numerous times suggest that only Tavares “would not help out the team right away” but, to trade the pick and get a good return would benefit the rebuilding process by speeding it up. Which makes sense in a way, but personally hope the Islanders take Tavares. Boylen does start to make unrealistic statements later on as he suggests to quote the article….”If they deal Tavares for a stronger base on which to build, the worst-case scenario for the Isles is they struggle their way to another last-place finish. All that would do is put them in a position to select Taylor Hall in 2010, another can’t-miss prospect who would go high in this year’s draft.” The notion that the Isles could do that bad again or even that the fans would put up with another season that bad is unrealistic. With the development of the young kids the team has shown its capable of winning against and playing against good teams. On THN Shootout: Draft talk, Rory Boylen was on and reiterated his idea that the Isles should trade the pick. But John Grigg, another blogger for The Hockey News said the Islanders should take Tavares because he provides a much more than just a talent they can build around the ice, he can help Wang push the lighthouse project off the ice(something iv said before). Tavares has time and time again said he will play for what ever team drafts him.
"I'd love to go No. 1, but then again I'd love to go to any NHL team. I feel like I can contribute in a good way. If it happens, I'll be honored and very excited. Today more encouraging new came out of Islanders country as Islanders Point Blank spoke with John Tavares, the projected number one pick in this years Draft. In the phone interview Tavares said this to Chris Botta,
“Once and for all, I want to be clear that it would be a privilege to be drafted by the New York Islanders. Please let everyone know that. I can’t believe some of the stuff that’s been out there. I like the Canadian media and I’m on the web reading like everyone else, but some it has gotten out of hand. I don’t know where they get that stuff.”Tavares is showing his commitment to playing for whatever team picks him by searching out Chris Botta to get his message directly to the fans of Long Island. Tavares also discussed his meeting on the Island with Management including reveling he spent the two nigh two day affair at Garth Snow’s home. Also Greg Logan reported that Snow has a pretty good idea about what he plans to do with the top pick this June. Wang will once again make a stop on WFAN tomorrow this time with Mike Francesca at 5:30 so encourage all my readers to tune into WFAN 660.

In what felt like a Tyson vs. Holyfield boxing match (without the ear biting), Supervisor Murray and Islanders owner Charles Wang sat in a room with each other and talked lighthouse for the first time since Jan 23rd. The meeting put together by the Long Island Planning counsel was packed with packed with media and residents to watch the soap opera like story play out. The meeting tense but pretty much the same answers, “ tell us yes or no” by Wang and “the ToH has moved at unprecedented pace o expedite the project” by Murray (for better coverage visit Newsday’s website). In the end a cautionary optimism was in the air as Murray and Wang planned a second meeting (round 2) for Friday in County executive Tom Suozzi’s office. This is a good sign, at least for the time being because it means that finally there will be dialog between town and developer along with hope of keeping the Isles here. Just to sum this up, I’m no political expert and don’t like to write about the lighthouse all to often. But it seems that there is no escaping it and it must be addressed. I will continue to update lighthouse news but not more than I have to and for more in depth analysis of the Lighthouse and its politics my suggestion is to hit up Let there be Light(house).com. If 4's a crowd 4,000 is a party

Today Islanders.com is reporting that already over 4,000 fans have gotten their free tickets to the Isles draft party being held at the Coliseum on 26th of June. So with the crowd capacity almost the same as the Sound Tigers 2 playoff games( I’m sure the total will grow even larger in the next 4 weeks) expect the arena to be loud and the fans to be pumped. Last years draft featured locker room tours, activities for the kids, player appearances, selling of merchandise and ticket packages, and was hosted by ESPN’s John Buccigross. Although details are limited on this years party the tours, kids activities, and of course sales of tickets and merchandise are going to be there again this year, there is no word on who or if they will have a host (my suggestion Chris Botta.) Islanders crazy will be at the party and will be looking to see the fans reaction should Snow choose someone else or trade the pick. So on a quick call to Hockey Night on Long Island this afternoon I asked hosts Steve, Alex and their guest Gary Harding of The View From Section 317 what they thought the fans reaction would be if they didn’t chooses Tavares. They responded by referring to last years draft and the upset nature of the fans following by saying “ there would be some serious displeasure….I don’t think there would be riots in the streets but there would be many disgruntled Islander fans.” The idea of having to get a ticket to the party suggests that the team is expecting an enormous crowd and so far its safe to say the place will be packed. So to quote the Hockey Night on Long Island crew we just have to hope for the best(that they pick Tavares).

Islanders Crazy contacted the Isles two or so weeks ago to inquire about an interview with Islanders owner Charles Wang. We spoke to who at the time was Islanders PR man Cory Witt, then never heard back from the Islanders. To my surprise I found out that Mr. Witt and the Islanders have parted ways today after last season Chris Botta left the Islanders and now runs Islanders Point Blank. Tomorrow Islanders Crazy goes back to the phone to re inquire about an interview with Islanders owner Charles Wang. But we wish Corey Witt the best of luck in his future careers.

This is an Islanders blog , but I also love to cover hockey in general so this is one of those times. Today I stumbled across http://savethecoyotes.com/, a fan made coalition to save the Coyotes from leaving Phoenix. The group has held as 2 rallies including one held last Saturday. A turn out of 500 people showed up to voice their support and a few local media and one Canadian news crew were also in attendance. As I explored more I followed links to Youtube videos of the rally and of a home made save the coyotes video. There I found something that is extremely upsetting not only as a hockey fan but as just a person. Here is one example of comments from some Canadian hockey fans.

HAHAHAHHAHAHA. What a fricken joke of a rally. Phoenix shouldnt have a team in the first place. Who the f**ck puts a hockey team out in the desert? Bettman is an idiot. Those dumb yanks are pathetic. I bet they couldnt even a name a person on the coyotes, yet ask any person in winnipeg and i bet he could name the whole 96 jets roster 13 years later. Put hockey where it belongs. Stick to your nascar racing and baseball.

Those are just a few examples of the comments I have seen while looking into this topic. I am in no way saying all or most Canadian fans use terms or talk down to phoenix fans, most are sympathetic but express their passion in a respect full way. The idiots who post comments like these do not further their case but make me feel less sympathetic to them. They of all people should know what is like to lose a team they love, but instead throw hateful insults onto the web in a display of idiocy mixed with hatred. Its sad to see it come down to stupidity on the internet. That’s just an opinion I encourage you to see for yourself. But in other news tomorrows Bankruptcy court hearing will begin what is likely to be a lengthy court procedure. The judge will make his ruling on who was/is in control of the team, expect an immediate appeal by the losing party and extreme anger if Moyes losses.

John Tavares and the Cleveland connection

Following another disappointing season in 2002-2003 season the Cleveland Cavaliers were rewarded with the first pick in that years draft and the right to draft high school phenom LeBron James. Previous to “King James” rein over Cleveland the cavs were an after thought in the NBA world. Through seasons of one and done playoff appearance and others of pure futility Cleveland was never thought as a marquee team in the league. James who was the most anticipated and touted prospect in NBA history went first overall to the Cavaliers in what some call(and I agree) as the turning point in the franchise. James went on to win Rookie of the Year but the team still failed to make the playoffs. The following year tea hopes were higher as the built around James almost making the Playoffs but failing to once again. Finally in 2005 the Cavs reached the playoffs for the first time since 1998 going all the way to the conference finals where James achieved many “youngest ever to..” records showing the city he is a star. The Cavaliers continued to progress including sweeping their first two round opponents in this years NBA Playoffs. This may seem like a Cavs history lesson that you don’t care about, but there is relevance to the Islanders. James not only helped revive a “down in the dumps” franchise but has helped start to revive an entire city. This past Sunday ESPN’s Outside the Lines did a feature on LeBron and what he truly means to the city of Cleveland. Naming the segment “The Chosen One” ESPN focused on not only the revival of the team but of a city that has been crippled by the economic downturn the country has faced. Helping to bring back life to this blue-colored American city. James and the teams success has started to revive the downtown Cleveland area, bringing back business to nightclubs and restaurants. Also bring Cleveland together as one to root on their cavs, making Cleveland seem more like a thriving city than one of the cities hit hardest by the economy. With the Cavalier history/information session over its time for me to make the connection. LeBron James helped not only save a franchise but he is starting to save a city. Cleveland is beginning to make an economic turn around with the help of “King James” and the Cavs success. The Islanders need a superstar that can save the franchise and push the county and town governments to move on the Lighthouse project. If the Islanders draft Tavares on June 26th and are able to build up a supporting cast that can succeed, you will not only see a bigger spike in attendance but you will see hockey come alive like it did back in the 01-02 season. With unemployment at 8.9% in April The Lighthouse project is needed project to help put people to work. If the project can get under way and you have a winning product on the ice you will see an influx of people come to the “Nassau Hub” working, shopping, and living, like we have seen in Cleveland in the downtown area as the Cavaliers have become a force to be recon with. Long Island can thrive with the help of Tavares and the Islanders, with the Lighthouse stuck in political limbo Tavares could be the man to help push it into reality. Some may ask why use the cavs as a comparison instead of an NHL team like the penguins or capitals who after drafting franchises players both have become constant cup contenders. Well the cavs have had the same success in their respective sport, but there is more to the cavs story than just basketball there is civic pride and example of how a player on a sports team can help revive and inspire an entire city. Long Island and the Islanders can look to Cleveland as an example just what a star player can do, and if the Islanders decide not to Draft John Tavares it’s a missed opportunity they may never get back. (The first thing we should do if we draft Tavares is come up with a good nickname.)

Sports Illustrated gives Wang a bad rap

Yesterday I stumbled upon Sports Illustrated worst owners list in which our old friend Charles Wang happened to appear as the third worst owner in the NHL. SI game this as their reasoning:
"If I had the chance, I wouldn't do it again," Wang recently told Newsday about buying the team -- just what Isles fans wanted to hear. He may have opened up his sizable checkbook multiple times, but the software entrepreneur doesn't know much about running a hockey franchise. His impulsive, management-by-committee style has the team in a perpetual rebuilding mode. It often seems like he makes contrarian decisions for the sake of being contrary: Witness his hiring and firing of GM Neil Smith after just 40 days. This past season, the Isles limped to their worst finish since Wang's first year in the owner's box and he's threatening to move the team to Kansas City if he doesn't get a new arena to replace decrepit Nassau Coliseum.
What I feel SI fails to address is his passion for the team and his commitment he has made to do everything possible to keep the on Long Island and in Uniondale. Oh and by the way following that terrible season the Islanders had during Wang’s first season as owner, they made it to the Playoffs the following year for the first time since the 1993-94 season, I guess SI forgot to mention that. Also the rebuild has paid off in the final months of the season as Okposo and bailey among others developed into everyday Islanders even earning Kyle Okposo a spot on the US team at the Worlds. The piece also makes Wang seem like he only wants his project, the truth is he has waited patiently for the past seven years and for some reason has just now started to push the town and county to quickly move on this project, but he bought the team to save the Islanders so Long Island could continue to have a sports franchise. Of course Wang has come under criticism for playing to much of a role in making hockey decisions, but honestly every owner including Jets owner Woody Johnson. But overall SI makes him sound like he doesn’t care at all about the team(a notion in which some fans have bought into over the years) which I feel is an untrue sentiment. If he didn’t care why would he invest his money, time and heart into a team he didn’t care about. He wouldn’t, he would have sold the team or moved them by now if he didn’t care, but he has stuck around in a run down arena and trying to better the Island as whole with his Lighthouse Project. So for the owner SI ranked as the third worst in the NHL I say this to them and any other fan who questions his motives, If it wasn’t for him the Islanders would have been gone by now or in a similar situation as the Coyotes.

Assistant coach Don Lacroix and Strength and conditioning coach Chris Schwarz have both left the team today as reported by Newsday’s Greg Logan. The team and coaches left on mutual grounds, leaving wholes in the coaching staff to filled by replacements of Gordon’s choice. Don Lacroix was a hand me down from the Ted Nolan days and Schwarz left to run his Physical therapy clinic full time up in Ottawa. Speculation has already started that a former well known recently unemployed Defensemen from the Islanders Dynasty years will fill the void on the bench, but that is pure speculation. In other news not really Islander related but still worth mentioning. The Nassau Coliseum has attract New York’s newest franchise, The New York Majesty of the Linger Football League. That’s right Women in their underwear playing football here at the Coliseum. SOUNDS GOOD TO ME! Seems like their will be football a lot more at the Coliseum this year. And on one final note the Islanders still have yet to contact me on an answer about my request for an interview with Charles Wang, hopefully one will be forthcoming.

Well once again Kate Murray failed to show up to a Lighthouse Meeting she said she would make time for. Newsday reports that a meeting set up by local labor union officials was blown off by Supervisor Murray, but town officials said that she was unavailable and would meet with the development group another time. This seems like another attempt by the town to make the developers and county look foolish, but is only hurting her in public eye.

Today we are going to take some time out to talk about the situation that is developing in Glendale, Arizona and how it effects us in a way. A financially troubled team who was at one point competition for the Islanders for last place is in the middle of a possible move to southern Ontario if BlackBerry CEO has his way. Following Coyotes owner Jerry Moyes filling Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, Jim Balsillie offered to pay $212.5 million to purchase the fledgling Coyotes team on the condition he can move the team to a southern Ontario city. But NHL commissioner Gary Bettman wants to do everything in his power to keep the Coyotes where they are. Chicago White sox owner has intentions of purchasing the team and keeping them there but his offer is significantly less money than Balsillie’s offer of $212.5 million. The players and coaches of Phoenix were shocked upon the news of the potential buy/move, TSN’s Darren Pang said “they were preparing for a sale and everything moving forward.” The situation is undoubtedly more complicated than that, the league has questioned the validity of the chapter 11 bankruptcy claim and has removed Moyes as an official of the team. Another odd situation that comes into play is can an Arizona bankruptcy court tell the league it has to accept the offer with stipulations attached. Moyes goes to court on Thursday to hash out the first part of this desert soup opera. So where do the Islanders come in you may ask, well today commissioner Bettman said "We generally try to avoid relocating franchises unless you absolutely have to," while speaking at a Wall Street Journal-sponsored session with the commissioners of the four major North American professional leagues. He went on to say “we don’t run out on cities,” this is sort of a sigh of relief for Islander fans who fear the team will leave if Wang doesn’t get his Lighthouse Project approved. Wang for months has said will explore all his options of he doesn’t get word for the OK by the start of next hockey season. This includes selling the team which also ties into this Arizona desert sandstorm. Most likely a potential buyer for the Islanders would move the team to Kansas city, Hamilton(maybe), Las Vegas or any other NHL hungry city but with the move come the probable opposition by Bettman(who has been a vocal supporter of Wang’s Lighthouse Project). He would most likely try to have Wang sell to someone who intended on keeping them on Long Island, but it would come no where close to the situation at hand in Phoenix.

Politics rule the Lighthouse and on a daily basis the fans are reminded and reminded. Our hope dwindles and we are always left with a sense of distain and confusion towards Charles Wang and the Town of Hempstead. Honestly these days its hard to point figures at one side or the other because both make valid arguments. The Town of Hempstead does need to go over everything to ensure the validity and to make sure that the Lighthouse project doesn’t run into any legal issues later on but its understandable that fans and supporters alike have trouble trusting Kate Murray due to her recent stunts. But lets just put the Lighthouse and politics aside, The Islanders are Long Island’s last pro team that they will ever have. And if the team leaves so does pro sports on Long Island. Although we have the Ducks, The Lizards of Major League Lacrosse, and a smattering of other teams but they don’t bring the same attention as a pro team like the Islanders. The scariest thing is their no certainty the team will stay. Like Brooklyn Dodger fans know there is no guarantee your team will stay when there is a dispute over stadium and land. Walter O’Malley moved the Dodgers west back in 1958 after he wasn’t able to but suitable land to build a new stadium to replace the aging Ebbets field. These stories have similarities but this is the part where they differ, unlike National league baseball in New York there is no William Shea type character that is going to bring the NHL back to Long Island let alone any other pro teams. Even though Charles Wang says the Lighthouse is more than hockey, for fans its all about hockey. Everyone is in this together from long island residents to fans to the players and coaches themselves, Even though this more than hockey ITS ALL ABOUT HOCKEY!! So we as Islanders fans should not feel that our team will never leave, cause hey if the Dodgers could leave Brooklyn the Islanders can leave Long Island.

Islanders Offseason Update(AKA John Tavares lovefest)

With 55 days until the one of the biggest drafts in Islanders history, the Islanders were helped out by the Pittsburgh Penguins and Anaheim Ducks this week. Last Saturday the Penguins ended the Flyers season guaranteeing the Islanders a third round pick. And Anaheim’s victory on Monday over the San Jose Sharks guaranteed them the Sharks 26th pick in the draft. So while Garth Snow has stockpiled more draft picks than a squirrel stockpiles nuts, the real question is what will he do with all of them? The first pick should undoubtedly go towards drafting hockey sensation John Tavares. The Islanders need a face to help promote the organization and even though Victor Hedman and Matt Duchene are both outstanding players themselves Tavares offers advantages on and off the ice that Hedman and Duchene cant match. The stardom and hype that has followed Tavares since he was 14 years old and the anticipated first round pick. Although he is no Crosby or Oveckin he is anticipated to be a franchise player and the just the face the Islanders need as they begin to slowly build their way back to being a consistent playoff contender. He also offers more leverage toward the Lighthouse project keeping the Islanders on Long Island. With an improved product on the ice it will force local officials to consider the effect of moving the only Major pro sports team on the island. And most importantly for management it helps sell merchandise and tickets. With an upcoming star on the team it will draw more fans and sell more merchandise(especially Tavares jerseys) increasing the teams profitability. Anything other than Tavares in the draft would be a bust and would face harsh criticism if Garth Snow’s pick was a flop. But some fans have expressed their optimism on message boards and other blogs about trading for Tampa’s 2nd pick giving them the ability to draft Tavares and Hedman. Although this would be an ideal situation if Snow could pull it off, it would have to come at a very high price possibly giving up an up and coming player on the roster or the Islanders 1st pick in next years draft. With that being said if Snow can somehow make that happen it would raise the franchises stock and make Garth Snow look like a season general manager(like ambitious gm Brian Burke lol). So with 55 days and counting untill draft day we are forced to anxiously wait and see what happens, whether our old friend Brian Burke successfully trades up(which is highly unlikely) or the Isles decide to look at someone else we just have to wait and see.

Penguins 4 vs Sound Tigers 2 (Golf anyone?)

once again the Sound Tigers have been eliminated from the Calder Cup Playoffs joining their parent club members on the golf course. At 7:30 into the first on the power play Chris Minard(who had a goal and two assists in tonight’s penguins win) scored off the rebound shoot of Jeff Taffe to give the Pens the early lead. Justin DiBenedetto tied the game just 1:58 later as he was able to jam the puck between Curry’s pads. Jeffrey and
Daoust each scored a goal in the second to give the Penguins a 3-1 lead. A minute twelve later Jessie Joensuu scored a goal to bring the Tigers within one. But Jeff Taffe sealed the win as he scored with just 55 seconds remaining in the game to make it 4-2. Peter Mannino stopped 14 out of the 18 shots he faced as Bridgeport went 0-4 on the power play.

The Bridgeport Sound Tigers Lost last night at home after coming back from down three goals to win against the Penguins in game 3. But the magic wasn’t there last night when the Sound Tigers lost 2-1 at The Arena at Harbor Yard. They now trail three games to one headed back to Wilkes-Bare/Scranton. In other news Red line scouting service dropped Tavares from number one to number three ranking Matt Duchene and Victor Hedman ahead of him. Thus making the debate of picking Hedman or Tavares more complicated also adding Matt Duchene to the list as a more serious contender. Also on that note Charles Wang and GM Garth Snow took a road trip up to see the London Knights in playoff action and scout and meet John Tavares. Bridgeport takes on the Penguins tomorrow night looking to keep their Calder Cup dreams alive.

In a game in front of Islanders brass the Bridgeport Sound Tigers put on a good show but couldn’t get the win. Starting the game with a power play The baby Pens took advantage of the early opportunity and 1:22 into the game Chris Minard scored on a questionable goal as he slapped the puck out of the air and knocked Nate Lawson’s helmet off. Later following a hooking call on Jessie Joensuu at 18:02 Dustin Jeffrey capitalized on the power play to make the game 2-0 pens. In the second period at 10:58 Luca Caputi scored to make it 3-0 pens. In the third the Sound Tigers finally came alive as Trevor Smith scored the Tigers first goal to make it 3-1. Later Rob Hennigar started to close the gap as he knocked one home to make it 3-2. But that was the last goal the Sound Tigers would score and the game would end in a 3-2 loss. Kyle Okposo was relatively quiet in tonight’s game and the Official attendance at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum was 4,927.

I took a week off and it seems like news is coming left and right out of Islanders country. Tuesday night the Islanders won the draft lottery giving them the first pick in this years draft with the only question remaining Tavares or Hedman? Garth Snow has been careful not to tip his hand at what he intends to do with the pick as Toronto GM Brian Burke
Is looking to trade up for that first pick for Tavares. Along with the perpetuated idea through the Toronto media that John Tavares is rightful property of the Leafs and that the Islanders don’t deserve him, including one Toronto reporter telling Chris Botta of Islanders Point Blank that hockey doesn’t matter on Long Island. Infuriating yes, but we will move on with the other news of the week. Kyle Okposo was selected to play for team USA in the world Championships in Switzerland along side coach Scott Gordon who was selected to be assistant coach there. Mark Striet will also be there representing his home town Switzerland. Okposo will also play in both Sound Tiger playoff games this week at the Coliseum.

The Islanders after tonights loss to the Penguins have clinched 30th place giving them the best chance for the top pick in the draft. Taking the early lead the penguins took off tieing the game in the first, scoring two in the second and scoring three in the third to make it a 6-1 loss. The Islanders will try to finish the season strong playing the Flyers saturday and the Bruins on easter sunday.

In a town where Major league teams have pushed away their most loyal of fans for the corporate big wigs there is a team who dares to be different. The Mets and Yankees open their brand new multi million dollar stadiums open next week and look beautiful and The Jets and Giants new stadium is coming along well but all these new Buildings come at a cost to the fans. The increased prices at both have made it hard for the die hards and families to come to the ball park and have a reasonable, nice day. With parking at a ridiculous price of $18 at citi field and With PSL's at the new Medowlands stadium is there any team that looks out for any of its loyal die hards? The answer is yes and the team is the Islanders. Although suffering one of the toughest season in many years the team has gone out of its way to show its fans they are loved. Although food prices are still steep at the old barn the deals they have run has made it affordable to bring whole family to a game with family packages that include food, hates and tickets for everyone at a reasonable price. Along with packages like the break away bundle the Islanders have made it easy to come and enjoy hockey in time when everyone is hurting. Culminating with fan appreciation weekend where they are offering buy one get one free deals for the two season finally games at the coliseum this weekend. With the rest of New York's sports teams pushing fans away the Islanders have opened their doors and are saying to theirs "we appreciate you!"

Who to root for?

With the 1st round draft pick on the line, it poses the question who do we root for? After the embaricing loss to the Hurricanes the Islander will be trying to redem themselves tonight against ex-Islanders bill Guerin and the Penguins. The Penguins who come in tonight fresh off their playoff clinching win against Tampa last Tuesday look to finish their home regular season on a winning note. The Islanders come in tonight need one final loss to clinch last place and guarentee the best odds for first pick in the lottery next tuesday. So here inlies the dilema do we root for the Islanders to win or lose? Well the answe is simple, its up to you. There is no bad outcome tonight.

After announcing yesterday that fan fav Doug Weight will return next year in an Islanders jersey, they took a beating so bad last night the even Islanders fans hoping for loses were upset at the outcome. The worst loss in the franchises history was made worse by news that Blake comeau fractured his wrist. The only good news was from San Jose where the Avalanche took their game to a shootout gaining a point and giving the isles a five point cushion from Tampa and a seven point cushion from Colorado. With the season ending in four days the Islanders will be facing all guaranteed playoff teams. With the team visiting Guerin and penguins tomorrow at Mellon Arena, they will fly back Friday to finish the season at the Coliseum hosting Philadelphia and Boston. Hopeing to rebound from the embarrising loss yesterday the will come out fighting in pittsburgh. A loss tommorow will all but guarentee the last place spot and the best odds for for the top pick in the lottery( which will be aired live on Versus next tuesday at 8 pm.

New York Is the Mecca of sports with teams ranging from the major four sports to the lessors ones like soccer and lax. But none of the major four offer a fan experience like the New York Islanders. From giving Season ticket holders once in a lifetime opportunities like rides on the Zamboni at the coliseum to getting to meet the entire team at the beginning of the season. They also open up every practice up to fans to come and watch them as the prep for up coming games as well as give the fans an opportunity to interact with and obtain autographs from every player on the team. A place for the fans to come talk hockey and have good time. Out of all the major teams in the new york metro area there isnt one that offers this much acces to its players like the Islanders do.

Islanders vs Lightning preview

A weekend preview saw a schedule that on paper looked to hurt the Isles in the hunt for last place in the NHL. But last night gave Isles fans something to smile about as both Tampa and Atlanta both gained at least a point in their matches against 2 playoff contenders. That makes tonight's match up extra interesting, With two teams playing hard but still looking for the better odds in the draft lottery play each other for a potentially harmful two points. The Islanders are coming off an embarrassing home loss to the Montreal Canadians who came to play and saw the Islanders for what they are, a competitive team who comes to play every night and was ready for them. As talked about on Hockey Night on Long Island With an Islanders win today and the next game they could be knocked out of last place by the Colorado Avalanche. Joel Rechlicz, Mitch Fritz, Mike Iggulden, Jesse Joensuu and Jamie Fraser (who is making his NHL debut) are all playing tonight.

Katie Murray called the Islander a pawn for Charles Wang to get his Lighthouse built, so are they just a pawn? The answer is yes and that happened the minute Kate Murray started her petition on line and through the mail. Even worse Islanders fans themselves have become pawns in this political battle with Murray on one side and Suozzi and Wang on the other. The appeal to the fans on both sides and the threats to move the team have made bad season on the ice even worse off it. With hope rising and falling every other day its hard to tell the fate of this historic franchise if the Lighthouse project fails. The team itself has managed to keep its focus on what it is suppose, developing youngsters and playing hockey which as of late has been paying off. The fans haven't been as Lucky, we've had to deal with the injuries, the loses, and the worst of it all the fear of losing this team. It has come down to the wire know as battle lines have been drawn, we know who stands where, but still have no idea what will happen. The mentality that i have come down to is this, either get this project done not only for the Islanders but for all of Long Island or Mr. Wang start telling us the other options on the table.

Canadiens 5 vs Islanders 1

The Islanders at time looked like the team we had seen in the past games. But in the end it was all Canadiens who have now taken the 7th sport from the Hated Rangers. Mike Komisarek scored the final blow to the Islanders in the beginning of the third making it an unreachable 5-1 lead. The Isles had some opportunities to get some more points back on the board but were denied by Jaroslav Halak. A frustrated Doug Weight battled Glen Metropolit in a blow for blow battle which ended in a draw, but was a nice fighting effort on Weight's behalf. The Isles injury club gained a new member tonight as Andy Hilbert left with a rib injury, his status is unknown. A tough home loss that is softened by a loss by the Rangers giving Montreal 7th place in the standings and a crucial must win tomorrow by the Panthers.

2nd Period

Another rough period and still down by a good deficit. The goal scoring started quickly as
Tanguay scored at 1:11 to make it 3-0 early. two minutes later Andrei Markov scored to widen the gap to 4 zip in montreal's favor. The ensueing faceoff lead to a fast fight between Joe Rechlicz and Georges Laraque in which Laraque took Rechlicz down very quickly. At 9:05 the Islanders were able to finally get on the board on an unassited goal by Tambellini making it 4-1. After the goal the Islander have picked up their play pressuring the habs but still have nothing to show for it.
1st Period

A rough start for the Islanders as once again Islanders country has been invaded by Habs fan. The period started well as the isels were able to put pressure on the habs and getting some scoring chances early. With Price out due to illness, Jaroslav Halak has steped up making save after save keeping the Islanders off the board. On the other side Danis wasn't so lucky, following a 2 minute charging call on Comeau Koivu scored a the power play goal at 13:03 off a face off win in the Isles zone. The bad luck continued just 7 seconds after a cross checking call on Tim Jackmen, Mathieu Schneider scored a goal on light shot that redirected off Martinek's stick giving the Habs a 2-0 lead.

As the hockey season on Long Island wraps up, the Lighthouse drama continues. The petition that was mailed out is just the first in an attempt by Town of Hempstead supervisor Kate Murray. An online version of the petition is now up on Islanders fan first.com, put up by the town recently. The almost comical online version of the petition trys to pull at strings of Islanders fans to help save their team. Using the phrase "We're all Islanders" to start the message uses an array of smoke screen tactics and pointing fingers. In a message practically blaming Islanders ownership, the Town makes several frivolous attempts to convey its message to try for stimulus money for an outdated arena. Accusing the Lighthouse group of trying to "shortcut" the environmental review process was one of the deliberately placed sentences to confuse and obscure the true facts. The Lighthouse group is looking for the town government to quicken their pace in the review to help move along this crucial project. Kate Murray has finally shown her true feelings about the project and has launched a campaign to pretty much kill it by appealing to the fans fear of losing their beloved team. This tactic will hopefully fail in the face of smart fans who are well informed about the project and the greater benefits it offers as opposed to an arena renovation alone. The idea of the federals giving money to an arena renovation is more dream than the lighthouse itself. It is a serious waste of time and completely irresponsible for the supervisor to even fathom this idea. Like it says on her site, the town and county government should be working together. Instead the town supervisor Murray has decided to try and kill a project so important to the future of the Islanders and more importantly, Long Island.

In an odd turn of events Long Island Native Chris Higgins and his Montreal Canadians Return to the Coliseum on Town of Smithtown night. The Smithtown native will likely have a number of family and friends in house tonight. The Canadians who havent beaten the Islanders since november first when they and their fans invaded the coliseum in a comeback win. Tonight the Islanders will play without Mark Streit, kyle Okposo, and Dean McAmmond who are all day-to-day with varying injuries. To replace them Trevor Smith and Sean Bentivoglio will come up from B-Port. Bentivoglio will make his NHL debut and former Canadian Yann Daniswill get the start tonight in a crusul must win game for the Habs who will be covered nationaly by canadian media.

Playoff Hockey at the Coliseum

Although the Islanders season is over Playoff hockey is right around the corner at the old barn in Uniondale. On April 17th and 18th the Bridgeport soundtigers will take the ice to face thier first round foe. Expect to see som familure faces as the soundtigers will regain so full time Islander rookies to play for them in the playoffs. Islanders 3 Capitals 5 Final

Third period

Islanders started off with the opening goal in the third as Richard Park scored at 2:12 to make it 3-2 isles. As the period progressed the caps started to pick up thier game. Later a heart stoping moment for the Islanders as Kyle Okposo went down after locking skates with a capitals player and needed to helped to the bench. Okposo was later seen on the bench and looked to be ok. Later a heated meet broke out between players behind the Washington net and Rechlicz was sent to the penelty box. Mike Green made them pay as he got the power play goal to tie the game at 3. Later the Islanders almost took the lead back when bailey got one past a down Theodor but was waived off due to goaltender Interference, and the momentum quickly shifted as on the ensuing power play Mike green came up big as he scored the game winning goal giving the caps the 4-3 lead. Backstrome sealed the deal with an empty net goal giving the caps the insurance goal.

Second Period

A second period of action and goals started quick, just 37 seconds into it Frans nielson redirected a shot with his skate past Theodor to give the Islanders a 2 goal lead. A minute and change later Rechlicz and Erskin went blow for blow as they gave the crowd a good show for their money. A minute or two later Mike Green left his feet and elbowed Andy Hillbert in the head starting a scrum along the wall that involved a Blow for Blow fight between Jackmen and Schultz. Unable to convert on the power play Ovechkin and the caps made them pay as Ovechkin scored his 54th of the season off a beutifull pace from Fedorov. Later Acoin scores his first goal as a capital to tie the game at 2 a peace.

First Period

Joey MacDonald who made every stop look easy kep the caps at zero. Coming off the shut out in detroit MacDonald has put a just as impressive effort in the first stoping all 10 shots he faced, Although the same cant be said for Theodor. Following a holding penelty by Fedorov at 13:52 the Islanders made them pay only 12 seconds later Kyle Okposo slaped one passed to give the Islanders a 1-0 lead.

Tonight the Islanders and Capitals face off in Washington once again over shadowed by Long Island politics and the Lighthouse. Coming off a tough shootout loss to the Flyers saturday the Islanders look to give another top team a run for the money. Joe Callahan and Joel Rechlicz rejoin the team again since all star defense men Mark Streit is out day to day with a groin injury. Joey MacDonald will get the start tonight and Danis will get the start against the canadians at the coliseum. Now on to the bigger news that developed last night, Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray has finally given Lighthouse supporters the answer they were looking for. Kate Murray has mailed out petitions to Town of Hempstead residents to persuade Nassau County Exec Tom Suozzi to ask for Federak stimulus money to help renovate the outdated Nassau Coliseum. The full petition can be read at Islanders point blank, but as for the idea Tom Suozzi was quoted by newsday saying “Very silly and amateurish. We don’t need petitions. We need Kate Murray and the town to help get this thing moving.” In a petition that is a mix between sickening and funny Kate Murray makes a joke of what this project is all about. Her proposal is a quick fix to major problem, Its like putting a band-aid on a bullet wound. Her proposal is putting a small percent of people to work for a short period of time then leaving the rest of the area the same concrete jungle, The Lighthouse looks to fix this problem in a responsible smart way incorporating, housing, shopping, business, and entertainment all in one while hopefulling fixing the lack of mass tranist in the area. And did anyone know the Islanders won the cup in 1984(obviously not) but according to Kate Murray and her team of PR people they did.
